Where is my data stored?
Your diary entries, vocabulary, and settings stay on your device — no account required. When you use AI features (grammar correction, speech-to-text, conversation), your text or audio is sent to our server for real-time processing but is not stored in any server-side database. We do collect anonymous product analytics (via PostHog) so we can understand how the app is used; you can switch this off in Settings → Send anonymous analytics. See the full Privacy Policy.
How do I back up my data?
Go to Settings and tap "Export Backup." This creates a JSON file you can save or share. To restore, use "Import Backup" on the same or a new device.
Can I use the app without the microphone?
Yes. The microphone is only needed for the speech-to-text (dictation) feature. You can type your diary entries manually and still get grammar corrections, translations, and shadowing exercises.
Why does the app need an internet connection?
The AI-powered features (grammar correction, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and conversation practice) require a connection to process your requests. Writing entries and reviewing past entries works offline.
How do I delete my data?
Go to Settings and tap "Clear All Data" to delete everything. You can also delete individual diary entries by swiping on them in the Shadow tab.
What AI services does the app use?
ShadowDaily uses OpenAI's GPT-4o (grammar correction, translation, conversation), OpenAI Whisper (speech-to-text), and ElevenLabs (text-to-speech). RevenueCat handles subscriptions, and PostHog handles anonymous analytics. Your text and audio are sent to these providers only to deliver the feature you're using, and we don't store a copy on our servers. OpenAI does not use data submitted through its API to train its models. Each provider processes data under its own privacy terms — see our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
The app isn't correcting my text / speech isn't working
This usually means the server is temporarily unavailable. Check your internet connection and try again in a moment. If the issue persists, please email us at the address above.
How do I change the speaking voice or speed?
Go to Settings. You can adjust the shadow exercise speed, vocab speaker speed, voice tone (higher or deeper), number of repetitions, and pause durations.
